Memorize and Understand Matthew 28:18-20
Definitions:
Mathew 28:18-20 is a recording of Jesus’ last words to His followers.
It is commonly referred to as the Great Commission. It outlines God’s
plans to reach the world with the good news of Jesus. By committing this
verse to memory, it will help you keep it highlighted in your everyday
life.
Scripture:
Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Details:
The
Great Commission is more than just one of Jesus’ teachings. It can be
argued that this statement reveals the reason that Jesus came from
Heaven to earth.
This scripture clearly defines why the Church,
meaning all Christians and all congregations, exists. Matthew 28:18-20
tells us these things:
- Jesus was giving these instructions to His followers on God’s full authority.
- Christians are to go to all nations. Taking the gospel to faraway
places is not something for a select few missionaries. It is the purpose
of the Church, i.e., all Christians and all congregations.
- Jesus asked for you to do more than evangelize people. His goal is
for you to “make disciples.” In other words, you are to help new
Christians grow to become strong in the faith as you teach them the
commands of Christ.
- Baptism being the mark of a Christian is also seen here. Those who follow Christ should not be ashamed of Him.
