This Week in Worship, May 21
The first song we will sing this Sunday in worship is “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” written by Charles Wesley (a Methodist preacher who wrote over 6000 hymns) in 1739, one year after his “conversion experience”. The song was originally titled “For the Anniversary of Ones’ Conversion” and contained 17 verses! The original first verse of the hymn was:
Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
By saints below and saints above
The church in earth and heaven.
Later, the first verse became the one we sing today. It was probably inspired by Charles Wesley’s spiritual mentor, Peter Bohler, who had said on his confession of Christ, “Had I a thousand tongues I would praise Him with them all!”
As we sing this great song Sunday we encourage you to think about your conversion and praise the Lord with us together!
Through Him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name.
